Small Hunting Knives Are A Top Choice
When an outdoorsman is getting ready to head out for an adventure, whether simply to get out and do some camping far from civilization or to go after some wild game or fish, they typically want to take along as little gear as possible, yet still have everything they need. This is where small hunting knives, also known as pocket knives, can come in very handy because they are an essential tool, often providing several tools in one, and yet they are compact and convenient.
Buying quality hunting knives can be such an important decision to avid outdoor sportsmen that they often labor over the process of deciding what kind of hunting and/or fishing knives they should invest in. Often they end up buying small hunting knives because of the fact that they are so easy to carry and that they can often serve many other purposes in everyday life as well, not just out in the wild.
It is safe to say that if you are a male over the age of eight, you probably have a pocket knife either currently in your possession or nearby. The pocket hunting knives are not quite as common because they have a larger blade and therefore are larger overall. The handle is typically designed and contoured so that you are able to get a really good grip on the knife and many times they have more than one blade.
The contoured and larger grip of these small hunting knives is helpful to maintain a solid grasp of the implement when using it for the important tasks of cleaning, gutting and skinning fish and game. No one wants to be in the midst of cleaning a recently bagged carcass and have the hunting knife slip out of their hand at a crucial moment. Because of this factor, it is a good idea to actually handle many knives before buying, thereby "test driving" the grips of different handles.
Of course, knives with folding blades are not the only type of small hunting knives available on the market. There are many experienced hunters who prefer to carry along one or more fixed blade hunting knives in their hunting gear. These fixed blade knives are larger and also require a sheath to be carried along as well. Many hunters feel that fixed blades are more stable and this is why they use them.
Probably the biggest disadvantage of folding knives, when compared to their fixed blade counterparts, is the fact that fixed blades are much easier to get completely and thoroughly clean. With the grooves in the handle and the folding mechanism comes some difficulty in being able to completely remove tissue, blood and other debris. While this is a viable consideration, many people still lean toward carrying these small hunting knives with them because they are so convenient.
